About

Los Angeles-based musician Thacher Schreiber’s interests lie in maintaining a diverse musical repertory, from chamber and solo performances to orchestral playing to contemporary composition.

A musician since the age of seven and an oboist since the age of eleven, Thacher picked up the oboe in middle school, beginning private studies soon after.  As he learned about his instrument, his love for music flourished, performing with all manner of ensembles large and small, adding clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, and percussion to his repertory, as well as developing an interest in composition.

He began his undergraduate studies with professor Kimaree Gilad at California State University, Northridge, where he appeared as a soloist with the CSUN Symphony.  In fall of 2020, Thacher transferred to UCLA, beginning studies with Dr. Jonathan Davis and other Herb Alpert School of Music faculty, performing in numerous chamber ensembles and the UCLA Philharmonia and Wind Ensemble, as well as giving three solo recitals.  It was here also that he founded the Fivemind Reed Quintet along with saxophonist Alex Lee, bassoonist Matthew Rasmussen, and clarinetists Kristine Llanderal and Darren Liou.

After earning his bachelor’s degree, Thacher began his graduate studies at the Mannes School of Music, studying under professor Ryan Roberts.  While in New York, Thacher gave a wide variety of performances with the Mannes Orchestra at the Lincoln Center, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s Chamber Music Mentorship Program, the Mannes Sounds Festival at Carnegie Hall, and an additional three solo recitals.

Beyond his studies with Dr. Davis and Professors Gilad and Roberts, Thacher has attended and participated in master classes hosted by Nicholas Daniel, Elaine Douvas, Carolyn Hove, Eugene Izotov, Cynthia Koledo DeAlmeida, Marion Kuszyk, Nicholas Stovall, and Sherry Sylar, among many others.  Thacher maintains an interest in composition, and is a member of the composition studio at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.
